BALD HILLS CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH - INMAN VALLEY

(Later known as the Sheoak Hill Congregational church)
It is believed that there are 20 to 30 grave sites in the cemetery but very few are marked. The church, although roofless and stripped of fittings, remains in fair condition.
A plaque on the church yard fence reads: "To commemorate the pioneers of the Bald Hills Congregational Church 1856-1905.
Dedicated 10th October 1976".

BOUNDY : An affectionate remembrance John Boundy Senior who died of bronchitis August 15th1865 aged 73 years. Also John Boundy Junior who died from rupture of a blood vessel September 18th 1864 aged 24 years.
Also Mary HARRIS grand daughter and niece of the above who departed this life May 17th 1863 aged 10 years.
Our pioneer family
. John Boundy buried here and his wife Maria buried Morphett Vale. Arrived with eight children Port Adelaide HMS Constance 29th August 1848. With gratitude for the faith, vision and courage they lived, to seek a better future for all who follow. 29th August 1998
BROOK : John Brook, died 24th June 19884, aged 80 and his wife Ann Brook, died 28th March 1875, aged 76. (No memorial stone but thought to be buried here)

HANCOCK: In loving remembrance of John Hancock Died February 4th 1904. Aged 86 years. Jemima wife of the above died October 18th 1892 Aged 73 years. Forever with the Lord
The descendants of John and Jemima Hancock commemorate their arrival in South Australia aboard the "Fairfield" on the 14th December 1840. Their faith and foresight, our inspiration. 1990
HARRIS Mary : Refer Boundy

LAW: In Memory of George Law. Died Feby 4th 1880, aged 20 years.
Before Jehovah's awful throne
Ye nations bow with sacred joy
Know that the Lord is God alone
He can create, and he destroy
LUSH: In loving remembrance of John Lush who departed this life March 13th 1884 aged 77 years. Also Mary Matilda youngest daughter of the above died July 21st 1860 aged 14 months. Also John Thomas infant son of W.I. and Ann Lush aged 5 weeks (died 12/1/1876 per SA death registrations).
In memory of Martha Lush nee Hopkins the widow of John Lush and a member of the Bald Hills Congregational Church. Born in England in 1816 and arrived in South Australia in June 1839. Died on the 23rd December 1896 aged 80 years and is buried here with her husband. Dedicated 18th October 1981.

McALPINE: Erected by her loving daughters to the memory of Catharine McAlpine who died at Inman Valley 27th February 1856. Aged 40 years.

BALD HILLS CEMETERY YANKALILLA (Bible Christian)
(Also known as Cockatoo Hill cemetery)

LITHEBY: Sacred to the memory of Charlotte M Litheby who departed this life May 23rd 1891 aged 35. Maria Litheby who died 22nd February 1910 aged 89 years.
(Maria Litheby's husband Samuel died Torrens Vale 27th September 1900 and probably also buried here but cannot confirm)

MARSHALL: In memory of Maria Marshall who departed this life December 17th 1871 aged 37 years. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
MILLARD*: George, born 1830, arrived SA "Prince Regent" July 1849, died Inman Valley 22/2/1879. Husband of Mary (née Ware).
MILLARD*: James, born 14/9/1858, died 30/4/1885. Son of George and Mary Millard.
MILLARD*: Joseph, born 11/9/1860, died 19/9/1926. Son of George and Mary Millard, husband of Sarah (née Foxwell). Sarah died 10/2/1927 and likely buried with her husband but unable to confirm.
MILLARD*: Mary (née Ware), born 1833, arrived SA "William Mitchell" August 1840, died 31/8/1918. Wife of George.
MURCH: In memory of Harriet the beloved wife of James Murch who departed this life March 17th 1868. Also James Murch who died February 13th 1871 aged 58 years.

NORMAN: Sacred to the memory of James Norman who died October 2nd 1880 aged 71 years. Also of Elizabeth wife of the above who died December 27th 1880 aged 71 years. Why do we mourn departing from friends
Or shake at death's alarms
Tis but the voice that Jesus sends
To call them to His arms

STEVENS: In memory of Stephen Stevens who died October 15th 1890 aged 76 years. Also Louisa Stevens his beloved wife who died January 28th 1885 aged 72 years. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.

* No gravestones exist but known to be buried in this cemetery. Understand that burial records have been lost.

METHODIST and WESLEYAN CEMETERY, NORMANVILLE

BROWN: Sacred to the memory of Sarah Elizabeth Brown the beloved daughter of Robert and Sarah Brown who died March 7th 1863 aged 21 years. But think not grave thoughts that will ... this treasure as for evil thine we only ask a transient stay till Jesus comes in the bright array.
BUTTERWORTH: Sacred to the memory of John the third son of John and Isabella Butterworth died the 16th September 1876 aged 17 years. I am the resurrection and the life. He that believeth in me tho he were dead yet shall he live.

COWAN: In memory of Elizabeth Cowan Died March 28th 1877 aged 28. Even so Father for so it seemed good in thy sight.

DODD: Beneath are deposited the mortal remains of Mary Archer the faithful affectionate wife of John Dodd of Carrickalinga who died the 12th January 1871 in her 53 rd year. With a sure and certain hope of a glorious resurrection.

FERGUSSON: Sacred to the memory of George Fergusson who departed this life March 19th 1858 aged 1 year 9 months

HEWETT: Sacred to the memory of Alfred Ernist Hewett who died October 3rd 1862 aged 13 months. Also of Louisa Alberta Hewett who died September 7th 1868 aged 2 years and 8 months.

LEAK: To the memory of Elizabeth Leak. The beloved wife of Nelson Leak who departed this life July 11th 1856 aged 43 years. Her end was peace. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His Saints 116th Psalm v 15
LEAK Nelson : Husband of Elizabeth, died 5th December 1869, aged 58. (Said to be buried here but no gravestone)
LEAK: Sacred to the memory of William Leak who departed this life in September 4th 1858 aged 52 years leaving a widow and six children to lament their loss. Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord. Tis hard to part that rends the heart. Tis hard to sever Tis bliss to know tis not forever

MILLS: Sacred to the memory of Ann Mills the beloved wife of George John Mills who departed this life August 24th 1861 aged 50 years. The memory of the just is blest. (in the same grave is a small headstone inscribed 'AM 1861')

ROADS: Sacred to the memory of Mary Ann the beloved wife of Thomas Roads who departed this life September 10th 1857 aged 46 years. Infliction sore long time I bore, physicians were in vain til God was pleased death should me seize to ease me of my pain. Also Isaac died August 20th 1859 aged 4 years.

THOMAS: Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Mary Thomas who died December 17th 1863 aged 41 years. He will swallow up death in victory.

TORRENS VALE CEMETERY
(Dairy Flat district renamed Torrens Vale in 1908)

The foundations of the Dairy Flat Bible Christian church (built 1854) alongside the cemetery can be seen)

BIDDLE: In memory of Ann Biddle who died June 25th 1872 aged 56 years. This last enemy that shall be destroyed.
BOUNDY: In affectionate remembrance of Kitty Boundy who died July 5th 1866 aged 32 years. Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust neither doth trouble spring out of the ground yet man is born unto trouble as the sparks fly skyward?

CLARK: Remembrance of Robert Clark died May 17th 1894 aged 37 years. Peaceful be thy silent slumber. Peaceful in thy grave below Thou no more will join our number Thou no more our song will know. Yet again we hope to meet thee when the day of life is fled and in heaven with joy to greet thee when no farewell tears are shed.
CLARK: Robert Clark born Gloustershire England Died 20th September 1874 aged 62 years. How great and how divinely free has been the love that found out me. Which saved me from the jaws of hell my Jesus hath done all things well. Also Margaret Clark the beloved wife of Robert Clark died 11th March 1895 aged 78 years. Tho lost to sight to memory dear.

GILL: In memory of George Gill. Bible Christian minister. Lately from Devon, England who died of typhus February 1st 1861 aged 24 years. But thanks to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. This stone is erected by the Bible Christian Ministers in this province and the surrounding fence by the Christian friends of the deceased in this neighbourhood.

HAWKE: Sacred to the memory of Nicholas Hawke who died September 26th 1882 aged 53 years. Also Amelia Ann Hawke beloved wife of the above who died September 27th 1916 Aged 85 years and 10 months. Also Mary Jane daughter of the above aged 3years and 9 months. Only gone before. Also Celina Hawke who died May 4th 1927 aged 65 years. A long sufferer at rest.
(Mary Jane Hawke died 11th October 1866 - SA Death registrations)

LEE: In loving memory of Charles Lee who departed this life January 29th 1872. Forever with the Lord. Erected by his brother William on his visit to the colony in 1892.
LEE: Sacred to the memory of Caroline Lee. The dearly beloved wife of Charles Lee. School master Dairy Flat, Yankalilla who fell asleep in Jesus May 8th 1868 aged 38 years. Within this sacred tomb repose until the resurrection morn the atoms which will then compose a perfect and a glorious form. For Christ her body will refine and make it in his image shine.

MUGFUR: Sacred to the memory of John Mugfur who departed this life June 19th 1856 aged 22 years. (unable to read inscribed verse) Also Mary Ann sister to the above and the beloved wife of George Putland who departed this life April 5th 1861 aged 29 years. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
MURCH: John See Stone, Eliza

NICHOLLS: In affectionate remembrance of William Nicholls who fell asleep in Jesus December 3rd 1866 aged 56 years. Also Elizabeth his beloved wife who departed this life December 8th 1866 aged 61 years. Friend after friend departs who hath not lost a friend there is no union here of hearts that finds not here an end. Were this frail world our final rest living or dying none were ..?
NOSWORTHY: In memory of William Nosworthy who died February 8th 1872 aged 61 years. Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord from henceforth yea sayeth the ?servant that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them.
Also Jane Nosworthy died December 5th 1879 aged 74 years. Also W.O. Nosworthy died February 27th 1877 Grandson of the above. (He was William Oliver Nosworthy who died aged 7 months - SA death registrations)

RENOWDEN: James Renowden died November 5th 1875 aged 55 years. Also Mary the beloved wife of the above Died February 24th 1908 aged 85 years. Rock of ages cleft for me Let me hide myself in thee.

STONE: In loving memory of my dear father Richard Stone who died at Torrens Vale August 1st 1899 aged 78 years. Arrived by ship "Sea Park" from Devonshire England 1852. A colonist for 47 years. We miss thee from your home We miss thee from thy place. We miss thy kind and willing hand We miss thy smiling face. Erected by his son DS
STONE: Eliza Stone beloved wife of Richard Stone died at Torrens Vale July 27th 1911 aged 90 years. Also John Murch father of the above Died 1856 aged 77 years (died 11/12/1856, SA Death registrations)
. Peaceful be thy silent slumber Peaceful in thy grave so low Thou no more will join our number Thou no more our song will know. Yet again we hope to meet thee when the day of life is fled and in heaven with joy to meet thee where no farewell tears are shed.

TONKIN: Erected to the memory of John Tonkin who departed this life April 2nd 1865 aged 54 years. When heaven would set our spirits free and earth and enchantment end. It takes thee most of factual means and robs us of a friend.
Also Prudence Tonkin relict of the above died 23rd January 1896 aged 85 years. We shall find our missing loved one in our Fathers mansion? fare.

HARCOURT CEMETERY - TORRENS VALE
(No trace can be found of the Harcourt Wesleyan church building (opened 1854) which stood nearby.)

BARTRAM : Ezra Welch, died 3rd May 1859 aged 2 and George Veery, died 29th March 1865, aged 4, sons of George and Frances Bartram.
(No headstones but said to buried here)
BIDDLE : Emily. Refer LORD.

COAD: In memory of Elizabeth Coad, died 26th March 1858 and her husband Nicholas Coad died September 22nd 1862.

DENNIS: Richard Dennis died September 4th 1881 aged 69 years.
DENNIS: To the memory of Robert Dennis who departed this life July 11th 1857 aged 48 years. Leaving a widow and eleven children to lament their loss. Turn moral turn thy danger know where ere thy fool can tread the earth rings hollow from below and warns thee of her dead. (In the same grave a small piece of slate is inscribed with RD 1857)

JONES: Janet Jones the beloved wife of Thomas J Jones who died March 4th 1891 Give ? ..beloved sleep. Thomas. Jones died 18th December 1891 aged 76 years.
The Jones inscription is on wood and impossible to decipher. On the grave is a plaque: "Thomas and Janet Jones arrived 20th July 1849 aboard the ship "Prince Regent" with three sons Daniel, Rowland, Benjamin. Born in South Australia Ebenezer, David, Samuel, Lewis, Jane, William and John ".

KELLY: Sacred to the memory of Mary Kate Kelly who departed this life March 24th 1860 aged 45 days.
(A little headstone also on grave with MKK 1860 inscribed, a temporary stone?)

LORD: In sacred memory of Samuel Lord who died November 17th 1905 aged 74. Also Elizabeth died June 26th 1887 aged 72 years. Also Emily Biddle beloved daughter of the above who died November 20th 1903 aged 45 years.

MAYFIELD: In memory of Rebecca the wife of Thomas Mayfield who departed this life April 21st 1866 Aged 62 years.
MAYFIELD: In memory of Robert Tooley Mayfield died March 25th 1886 aged 50 years. He giveth his beloved sleep.
MAYFIELD: Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Ann Mayfield who departed this life August 26th 1883 aged 48 years. There is joy with the angels.

NORMAN: Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth the beloved child of William and Mary Jane Norman who departed this life February 18th 1866 aged 4 months.

SHANNON: Sacred to the memory of George Shannon who departed this life on the 9th day of December 1857 Aged 40 years
STONE: In loving memory of William D Stone (Willie) beloved eldest son of D and EA Stone died at Torrens Vale December 14th 1886 aged 8 years and 6 months. Gone but not forgotten. Safe in the arms of Jesus Safe on his gentle breast There by His love o'er shaded sweetly my soul shall rest.
(This grave is located about 20 metres or so outside the fenced cemetery for unknown reasons.)

TONKIN: In loving memory of Prudence Tonkin dearly loved wife of James Tonkin who died September 20th 1904 aged 73 years. One less at home the charmed circle broken a dear face missed day by day from its accustomed place but cleansed and saved and perfected by a grace. One more in heaven.
TONKIN: Mary Ann Doble Tonkin who departed this life May 1st 1855, aged 18 years.
Soon must part for ever from the joy of time and sense .Let it be my first endeavour to prepare for going hence Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his loyal ones - Psalm 116v15
(Also a small broken stone inscribed MADT, a temporary marker?)
