George Law was only twenty years old when he died. The story goes that he and the local trooper both had eyes for the same lady. The trooper and George had an argument and the trooper hit George across the forehead with his whip (it is believed that they were both on horseback at the time). The wound became infected and George became seriously ill. On his death-bed, George suddenly sat bolt upright and sang right through the hymn ’Before Jehovah’s Mighty (Awful?) Throne’ and then laid down and died! Apparently George was a devoted church-goer and singer.
Hanna is also searching for cemetery data relating to the Millicent, South Australia cemetery, or any in that general district, trying to trace a Catherine Law[s] who took up land in the Hundred of Mt Muirhead in South Australia’s south east. It’s a bit of a long shot, but has found reference to a Catherine LAWS. Hanna has been looking for a Catherine LAW who came to Australia on the Duke of Wellington in November 1849 with her father Michael LAW and stepmother Helen, and two brothers, Robert and Joseph. (Joseph was my husband’s great-grandfather). The George referred to above was Joseph’s son. Also been unable to find any reference to Michael and Helen after their arrival in South Australia in 1849. Hanna has managed to find Robert (with his wife Emelia), who is buried in Smythesdale Cemetery in Victoria. Robert’s daughters are buried in the Clunes, Victoria cemetery. Paul was probably the most important Pioneer of the town of Swan Reach.
Paul purchase a parcel of 520 acres of land near Swan Reach, and moved there early in 1897. He battled the rabbits as he tried to farm the semi- arid land, but in 1899 he had a private sub-division made of 46 allotments for the township. He also established a punt, which proved to be a very pleasing financial success. When his wife Emma was granted a licence for an Hotel, he built a bar adjoining their home.
Paul became known throughout the prosperous town as the "Boss", and his wife also ran the Post Office from their back verandah.
Emma died in 1900, and Paul soon remarried. He continued to be the publican until 1909, and then had a house, "Scenic Villa", constructed on the cliff, above the hotel, where he lived with his family, and his mother, until his death a couple of years later. William died 1870 – he is not listed as Israel & Williamena&rsqo;ss child from BDM records but he is recorded by M.B. Council as being in part lot 26. I believe it is an incorrect entry by council as I have record of a William born 1856 to a Henry Adams who did live at Kanmantoo where Israel lived.. I have not established a connection between Israel and Henry. This William has the same age and date of death. I have B register record but not death. Could possibly be related ???
According to BDM records Henry had a son John who was buried in Callington cemetery – died 4-1-1859 aged 10 yrs but we have nothing fron the M.B. Council about him.
William died 1882 – is Israel & Williamena’ last recorded child. He died in suburban Stepney where future generations lived. I have his BDM records.
Historian searched personally and has the registration numbers of all BDM records to verify dates.
So to sum it all up – 5 or 6 children could be buried in part lot 26 at Callington Cemetery. And 4 or 5 could belong to Israel.
