Some were pioneers of this great country.
Others came to our shores in later years.
All were someone's family, all left us with memories.

If you have some information relating to your ancestors who are named on this site, please email me with the information and I will include it on my website. An example may be found by searching the Narrogin Cemetery for the name MIDDLETON

RICHARDS, Mary May, Beloved wife of Ernest devoted mother of Elsie (Elise?), Tom, Stan & Verna, 4.5.1899 - 30.8.1990.
RICHARDS, Ernest Whitfield, Beloved husband of May, devoted father of Elsie (Elise?), Tom, Stan and Verna, 2.9.1896 - 11.10.1979.
Ernest Richards is mentioned on page 99 of the book "The Servicemen and Women of Quairading and District 1900-2000" by Mary M. Clemens.

The National Archives of Australia shows the following:-
1914 - 1920
RICHARDS, Ernest Whitfield : Service Number - 28490 : Place of Birth - Oswestry England : Place of Enlistment - Perth WA : Next of Kin - (Father) Richards, Thomas
1939 - 1948
RICHARDS, Ernest Whitfield : Service Number - W82921 : Date of birth - 02 Sep 1896 : Place of birth - Cardiston (Cardeston) England : Place of enlistment - Quairading WA : Next of Kin - Richards, Mary
Thomas Richards, father of Ernest Richards and Arthur Richards below, is mentioned in the section Pioneering Days in the Quairading District - Northam Advertiser 4 Jan 1968 on page 157 to 159 of the book "Memories of Quairading" by Mary M. Clemens.

Following on from this book, I found the following from the passenger list of the "Oruba" travelling from London to Fremantle arriving there on 2 Aug 1905 which showed the following:
Name relationship age according to ship's log born according to ship's log according to WW1 service record
Mr Thomas Richards husband/father British Farmer
Mrs. Richards wife/mother British
Master Ernest Richards son aged 10 years born circa 1895 circa Sep 1896
Master Arthur Richards son aged 9 years born circa 1896 circa Jan 1894
Miss Alice Richards daughter aged 6 years born circa 1899
Miss Edith Richards daughter aged 4 years born circa 1901
Master Frank Richards son aged 2 years born circa 1903
Some evidence suggests that Arthur was the eldest child and Ernest was the next eldest child followed by Alice, Edith and Frank. My best estimates for their birth years are Arthur (born 1894), Ernest (born 1896), Alice (born 1899), Edith (born 1901) and Frank (born 1903), but please be aware that at this time the birth years for sons Ernest and Arthur have not been verified. Some evidence also suggests that the ship was called the "Marathon" at the time of the voyage in 1905.

WILLIAM ARGENT
The late Mr. William Argent was born in Two Wells, South Australia, on 14th April 1882, and was the second of Frederick Thomas and Eliza Argent. In 1892 the family moved to Warracknabeal (Victoria), where after leaving school he worked on farms. By saving as much as possible he was able, in 1902, to commence farming and contracting. In 1904 he went to Lake Bolac district where he engaged in farming activities until 1910, the year he decided to come to W.A. He purchased a farm on the Hotham River south of Wandering, which at the time was uncleared and running only 200 sheep. In the course of a few years, virgin land was turned into a prosperous farm with substantial buildings. In 1927 he left the district and went to East Kulin, where he built up a prosperous farm. His two sons, Roland and Gilbert, will carry on this property in addition to their own. About seven years ago he retired to live in the city at South Perth, but being unable to settle there, he purchased a home in Narrogin in 1952. He always took an active interest in the affairs of the community in which he resided. He was a member of the Wandering Road Board for many years and was untiring in his efforts to have the Railway line extended from Dwarda to Narrogin, and later the line extended from Lake Grace to Hyden. He was a prominent exhibiter at the Wandering and Kulin shows. It will be recalled that on once occasion at Wandering, the appointed judge could not attend through illness, so Mr Argent withdrew his entries in the stock section and acted as judge. He also travelled long distances in order to judge livestock in other country shows. He was well-respected, being well-known for his honesty and integrity. In 1906 he married Sarah Jane Sherwell. They had twelve children (nine of whom are living), twenty four grandchildren and two great-grand children. He was buried in the Methodist portion of the Narrogin cemetery where a large number of friends gathered to pay their last respects. Pall bearers were: Messrs F Parry, A Riseborough, R Farrell, H Nicholls, C Stone and P Warburton.
