Text[4]=["SNOW - Wickepin and Mourambine Cemeteries","Information provided by Walter Snow’s oldest child, Muriel
The child, Irwin Lewis Snow, born 3 May 1908 died 27 July 1908, like Norman Lewis Snow (also buried at Mourambine), were younger brothers of Walter Henry Snow (buried at Wickepin), all three were children of Henry Wyborn Snow and Agnes Jane Snow (maiden name Dhu) who were both buried at Wickepin.
The 3 year old John Snow who died in 1981 was a child of Mary Ann (nee Walton) and Alfred Snow - the details are also in Barbara Sewell’s "The House of Northbourne Parkers." He was born on 14/8/78, baptised on 23/2/79, died 1/10/81.
Alfred Snow was born on 25/11/1848 in Essex, and arrived in Australia with his parents John and Maria on the "Travancore" on 13/1/53. We haven’t been able to locate John Snow’s grave in York (or nearby - there is apparently a small cemetery just outside York, could be there).
Mary Ann Snow was born in 1849. She was a Walton. She married Alfred Snow on 2/12/1869."]
Text[5]=["MELICAN, Martin - Wickepin Cemetery","Information provided by Martin Melican
He was born at Mt. Moriac, Victoria in 1869.
He was one of eight children of Irish immigrants, Thomas MELICAN and Bridget O’NEIL.
In 1874 the family selected land near Donald in the Wimmera district of Victoria.
About 1909 Martin moved to WA, where he married Sarah Geall in Perth in 1910. They farmed at Wickepin.
Following is an extract from a newspaper provided by his descendant
The high esteem in which the late Mr Martin MELICAN, formerly of Donald District, was held during his residence in Wickepin (WA) is amply evidenced by the following extract from the Narrogin Observer - After years of agonised suffering, borne with Christian fortitude, an old and respected pioneer of the Wickepin district, in the person of Mr. Martin Melican, passed away at his residence on Wednesday morning last.
It is not too much to say that with the passing of this brave man there swept over the whole district a wave of keen regret and deepest sympathy for the wife, who had so nobly borne the brunt of the distressing circumstances of the husband’s complaint for some years past. There was no finer spirit in the district than the late Martin Melican; none who so ungrudgingly gave of his best for the benefit of others, or who bore a greater reputation for the qualities of good citizenship. He was universally esteemed by all sections of the community in which he moved and the writer, who was closely acquainted with him in all his public duties over the past 18 years, can truthfully say that on no occasion did he hear one word expressed other than in deep appreciation of the worth of this estimable man. He was big in stature, big in heart and mind. No paltry estimate was set on the affairs of the Wickepin district by Martin Melican and no sordid consideration warped his judgment or determined his stand for what he considered to be just and equitable. He took an active interest in all public affairs, and that interest was directed to the uplifting of the district, which has sustained a heavy loss by his death. May he rest in peace.
He died as he had lived, peacefully and in dignified acceptance of the decree of Providence upon whose guidance and power he had rested throughout life with deep faith and in the proper humility of a Christian spirit. Although many hearts are sad because of the loss of a good friend, there is a measure of satisfaction in knowing that he is beyond the sphere of earthly suffering of a most agonising character.
For years he had been a martyr to an insidious disease, from which there was no hope of recovery. Some time ago he secured some relief by the amputation of one of his legs, but a few months ago it recurred and despite the skilful attention of Dr Hadley of Perth, and Dr Crooks of Wickepin, it was known that there was little, if any, hope for him. Of late he had suffered most severely but towards the end the pain ceased, and for a few days at least he was allowed a measure of peace before relapsing into the semi-insensibility which was the forerunner of the end.
The funeral took place on Thursday and the mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr T P O’Connor of Narrogin, whilst the service was conducted by Rev Dean Brennan. The funeral was attended by representatives of practically every family in the district, the cortege being over a mile long and on the body being lowered to its last resting place there were very few dry eyes amongst the enormous gathering of men and women, most of whom had laboured with the deceased in the years gone by to build up the fine district in which he was such a central and honoured figure. 18-5-1923."]
