Matron MA Hammer was nursing Matron of "Cereila", a private hospital, from 1918 until 1921. As a new widow, Mary Anne Richardson (nee Little) came to WA from London aboard the "Ajana" in 1913. Accompanied by her 2 year old daughter Margaret and another child Winifred, Mary Anne first nursed in Midland. Following her marriage in 1916 to Rev. Charles Hammer, the family moved to Wagin where Rev. Hammer became the minister for the Methodist Church. In 1918 Matron Hammer purchased a private home "Cereila" and turned it into a hospital. Known as a kind and compassionate person, her sudden death in 1921 left many mourning. This plaque was placed by her granddaughter Ann Cosgrove, her grandson Robert Hoskins and the Wagin Historical Village in 2002.
