OLD COLONIST'S DEATH.
The Late Mrs. H. T. Lawrence.
Mrs. Harriett Thompson Lawrence died at the residence of her son-in-law,
Mr. C. H. Jahn, Merredin, on October 28. At the time of her death, the
deceased was one of the oldest West Australian-born colonists. Mrs.
Lawrence was born at Picton in 1844. Her parents arrived at Australind
in 1836, where her father tanned the first leather in the district. She
was the eldest of a family of nine, all of whom pre-deceased her, with
the exception of Mrs. M. Wood, who is now living at Guildford. One of
her brothers was the late Superintendent Lawrence of the West Australian
Police Force. The late Mrs. Lawrence retained her faculties till the
last, and died after a very short illness. Her eyesight was very keen,
and she was able to read and do the most delicate fancy work. Having a
good memory, she could recount many historical incidents of the early
settlement of the State. She used to tell with pleasure of her school
days when she would accompany the late Lord Forrest and his brother t! o
school in Bunbury, and also when she used to nurse the present
Lieutenant-Governor, Sir James Mitchell.
