WARD, Fred. Born Windsor, NSW 1835 - died 25 May 1870 aged 36 years.

For horse stealing, Ward served two prison sentences in Cockatoo Island Gaol, in Sydney Harbour, from where he escaped in 1863 with Fred Britten.
He bailed up coaches, roadside inns, stores and private homes throughout NE New South Wales, sometimes with a young accomplice, but mosly alone.
He was a superb rider, usually riding stolen thoroughbred horses, and difficult to track or catch. He was never violent and would return shots only when being fired upon.
He held up a hawker, Giovani Cappusotto at Blanch’s Inn on Church Gully on the afternoon of 25 May 1870, and was pursued by Senior Constable Mulhall and Constable Walker of the Uralla Police.
At Kentucky Creek Ward left his horse and swam across. Constable Walker shot the horse and called on Ward to surrender. He refused and after a struggle, Ward was shot.
